Floyd Collins: A Tale of Survival and Hope

The University of Utah’s Department of Theatre is set to captivate audiences with the media spectacle musical “Floyd Collins” at the Babcock Theatre from February 14 to March 1, 2020. This production draws its inspiration from a true story that became a media frenzy in the early 20th century, blending historical events with artistic flair on a single stage.

The Tale of Floyd Collins: A Quest Beneath the Earth

In the heart of rural Kentucky in 1925, “Floyd Collins” tells the folk-style musical tale of an ambitious young man who ventures deep underground in search of glory and riches. His adventure takes a dire turn when he becomes entrapped 55 feet beneath the surface, and the ensuing media circus transforms his plight into a nationwide sensation. As the days pass, Floyd’s story captivates the imagination of the American public, drawing crowds of spectators and reporters to the mouth of the cave. Inside the earth’s embrace, Floyd grapples with his fate, reminiscing about his dreams and the family he fears he may never see again. Above ground, efforts to rescue him become a race against time, revealing the best and worst of humanity. The musical weaves together themes of hope, determination, and the indomitable human spirit, set against a backdrop of haunting melodies that echo the depths of the cave and the heights of human aspiration.
